Most debates are now set in the calendar for this fall’s local elections in the five East End Towns. Here’s what we know to date:
Riverhead
Incumbent Republican Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard is running to keep his seat, along with Councilmen Kenneth Rothwell and Bob Kern. Pastor Jerry Halpin is running for Supervisor on the Democratic line, along with retired New York City firefighter Kevin Shea and Mark Woolley, a longtime Republican congressional aide.
All six candidates for Town Supervisor and Town Board have agreed to participate in a forum sponsored by the Greater Calverton Civic Association and the Wading River Civic Association on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Riley Avenue Elementary School, 374 Riley Ave. in Calverton.
Only the Democratic candidates have agreed to participate in the following two forums:
The Greater Jamesport Civic Association will hold a candidate forum on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Jamesport Meeting House, 1590 Main Road in Jamesport. The Heart of Riverhead Civic Association will hold a candidate forum on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 10:30 a.m. at the Riverhead Free Library, 330 Court Street in Riverhead.
Southold
The North Fork Civics will hold a candidate forum for Southold Town candidates in this fall’s election on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Peconic Lane Recreation Center at 970 Peconic Lane in Peconic.
Candidates for the three seats on the Southold Town Board, including the Fishers Island Council/Justice seat, will participate in the forum. Incumbent Democrat Brian Mealy is running to keep his seat, alongside Alexa Suess and Kate Stevens (for the Fishers Island seat), against Republicans Nick Planamento, Chris Talbot and Stephanie Hall (for the Fishers Island seat). Longtime Fishers Island Councilwoman/Justice Louisa Evans is stepping down this year.
Candidates for the Suffolk County Legislature’s First Legislative District seat — incumbent Republican Catherine Stark and Democratic challenger Greg Doroski — and candidates for Southold Town Trustee will also be given an opportunity to speak. The League of Women Voters of The Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork will hold a Southold Town Council Candidate Debate on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Peconic Landing, 1500 Brecknock Road, Greenport.
The Peconic Landing auditorium parking lot is under construction, and attendees are being directed to park at Brecknock Hall, at the entrance to the community, and take a shuttle bus from there to the auditorium.
The North Fork Chamber of Commerce will hold a candidate forum at its Oct. 20 dinner meeting at the Southold American Legion at 6 p.m. Stay tuned to northforkchamber.org for more details.
Shelter Island
Update Oct. 12: The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, Shelter Island & The North Fork’s Shelter Island Candidate Forum, originally scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed “due to the current weather advisory and recommendation to avoid nonessential travel,” according to a Facebook post this morning from the Town of Shelter Island. The town says the forum will be rescheduled to Sunday, Oct. 19 at a time to be determined.
The League of Women Voters of The Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork will hold a live debate for Shelter Island Town Supervisor, Council, Clerk and Superintendent of Highways on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Shelter Island School, 33 North Ferry Road, Shelter Island. It will also be posted later on the town’s Channel 22 and YouTube channel.
Southampton
Candidates for two seats on the Southampton Town Council will participate in a League of Women Voters virtual debate on Sea-TV on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Incumbent Republicans Cyndi McNamara and Rick Martel will debate the issues with Democrat Tom Neely. The two Working Family Party candidates, Ieshia Galicia and Andrew Smith have been invited but not RSVP’d as of press time. View it live or watch it later at www.youtube.com/c/SeaTVSouthampton.
East Hampton
Candidates for two seats on the East Hampton Town Council will participate in a virtual League of Women Voters debate on LTV on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Incumbent Democrats Cate Rogers and Ian Calder-Piedmonte will debate the issues with Republican J.P. Suffolk County Legislature
The League of Women Voters of The Hamptons, Shelter Island and the North Fork will also host a virtual debate on Sea-TV for candidates for the Suffolk County Legislature’s Second Legislative District on Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Incumbent Democrat Ann Welker will debate the issues with Republican challenger Raheem Soto. It will be aired live and available for view later at www.youtube.com/c/SeaTVSouthampton.
Early Voting
Early voting runs from Oct. 25 through Nov. 2. More info is on the Suffolk County Board of Elections website.
